Customer Spotlight: Summers Drilling

Dave Summers of Summers Drilling picking up his new V-140X.

“We took notice of Versa-Drill as a great company with undeniably the best support in the industry. Not only that, but the Versa-Drill six-wheel drive fit exactly what we needed. They’re very easy to work on and overall really well-designed.”

This month we took some time to chat with Dave Summers from Summers Drilling. Located in Stony Plain, Alberta, this third-generation family business is not only well-established, but has been one of the leading companies in Alberta for the last three years. We are excited for their most recent purchase of a V-140X and are proud to continue our work with them.

Check out our talk with Dave Summers.

VD: Hi there, Dave! Can you take a minute to tell us a bit about your company?

DS: Summers Drilling was founded in 1917 by my grandfather using horse operated drill rigs. We’re still fully family-owned and operated.

VD: We hear your family runs a charitable foundation as well. Can you tell us a bit about that?

DS: Yes, it’s something special that my parents started and we’ve continued. It’s called Water for Life in Africa (WFLA). The program improves water supply for villages in rural Africa by drilling wells that locals can maintain themselves after we’re gone. Access to clean water can be a huge problem, but we’ve completed more than six wells near the capital of Malawi.

VD: That sounds like an incredible program.

DS: It really is. We’re proud of the work we do.

VD: Summers Drilling has been around for over a century. Over such a long period of time being in operation, what has been your biggest obstacle in the business?

DS: The biggest obstacle has been the changing dynamics of the industry. It makes us work to stay very up-to-date on education and equipment. But that’s what has separated us from many who have fallen behind while we’ve progressed.

VD: Which Versa-Drill rigs have you purchased in order to continue moving forward? And what do you mainly use them for?

DS: We have purchased V-100X, V-125X, and V-140X. They get used for a lot of different purposes—domestic wells, commercial wells, and dewatering is a huge business for us.

VD: What made you decide to invest in our products?

DS: We took notice of Versa-Drill as a great company with undeniably the best support in the industry. Not only that, but the Versa-Drill six-wheel drive fit exactly what we needed. They’re very easy to work on and overall really well-designed.

VD: After using three different types of Versa-Drill rigs, what have you found to be the biggest advantage of them overall?

DS: The biggest advantage for us is the speed and versatility. There’s also a lot of power behind each rig versus the size and weight.

VD: That’s great to hear. And my last question—you said you’ve loved the support from Versa-Drill. Can you describe your experience with the service department?

DS: We have had to get parts before and the support is quick and fast—incredibly so. Working with Versa-Drill has really just been excellent service all around.
